Truman Elementary School, in the Lindbergh School District, is a winner in the 2009 “Champions For Character: Celebrating Service-Learning” recognition program sponsored by Cardinals Care in conjunction with CHARACTERplus. Truman Elementary is being honored with this award for their exceptional integration of service-learning into the school curriculum and school culture.
Earlier this semester, a panel of community judges reviewed Truman’s application that described their student-led service project, “The Odyssey Connection.” Judges visited Truman to interview students and staff on service-learning, see youth in leadership roles and hear reflections on the impact the program has on the community and the participants.
The Odyssey Connection program was created due to the concerns of two Truman students, who recently transferred from the Odyssey Academy in Galveston, Texas. They were worried about former classmates who were bearing the effects of Hurricane Ike. The students and their new Truman friends brainstormed ideas to provide aid to these victims.
What started as a class meeting developed into a school-wide initiative as Truman’s Character Education Committee became involved. The entire Truman community collected needed items to send to the academy. This student-initiated project also gave way to personal bonds being formed through pen-pal letters and classroom lessons that integrated studies on the state of Texas and weather.
By becoming aware of the needs of a school devastated by a hurricane, students, teachers and the Truman community enriched their education while meeting the needs of a community 900 miles away.
Truman Elementary School will be recognized during a special pre-game awards ceremony before the May 6, Cardinals baseball game in Busch Stadium. The school’s name will also be featured on the Diamond Vision big screen. The St. Louis Cardinals donated tickets to thank students and staff members for serving as “Champions For Character.”
